Privacy on Umbrella Lane

This is a reading site. It does not ask who you are, and it is built so that it has very little to know. Here is exactly what is counted, and what happens when you leave through a sponsored link.

Summary

In four sentences

Umbrella Lane sets no cookies. It has no accounts, no comment boxes, no contact forms and no newsletter, so there is nowhere to type personal details. Fonts, images and scripts are all served from this domain, and the site's security policy blocks anything loaded from elsewhere. Page views are counted in aggregate by software we run ourselves.

Analytics

What is counted

We use Umami, an open-source analytics program, on a server we control. Its script is served through this domain. No advertising or analytics company is sent your visit.

Counted

The page that was opened and the time. The site you came from, when your browser reports one. Your country, browser type and whether the screen is a phone or a computer. Whether a sponsored link was clicked, and on which page.

Not counted

Your name, email address or phone number, because the site never asks. Anything that follows you from one visit to the next, since no cookie or stored identifier is set. Anything from other sites you use.

What we end up with is a tally of pages and clicks. It cannot be turned back into a list of people.

Infrastructure

Servers and delivery

The pages are stored on rented servers in the European Union and delivered through Cloudflare, which also filters out abusive traffic.

Any web server has to see the network address a request comes from in order to answer it. Our server and Cloudflare both process that address and keep routine technical logs. We do not join those logs to the analytics tally, and we do not use them to work out who a visitor is. Cloudflare handles its logs under its own published policy.

Leaving the site

Sponsored links

Buttons such as "Meet someone" lead to a dating service run by another company. We may be paid if you register there.

The link tells that company's network which site and which page the click came from. That is how a commission is attributed. It does not carry your name or any identifier of you, because we do not have one.

Once you arrive on the other site, its own privacy policy and cookies apply, and anything you enter there goes to that company, not to us. Read their terms before you sign up. The about page explains how this funding works.

Your information

Your information

We hold no account, profile or contact record for any reader, so there is nothing personal for us to show you, correct or delete.

If this page changes

If the site ever starts collecting something it does not collect today, this page will say so before that happens, and its modified date will move.
